A vented hot water cylinder needs a water storage tank fed from the mains, situated in the loft. Gravity takes water down to the hot water cylinder, often in an airing cupboard, by means of a vent pipe. In the cylinder the water is heated to supply taps or radiators or is stored for later use. As water is heated it expands, so the vent pipe is needed, allowing it to overflow to the tank in the loft. This system relies on gravity for the flow rate of water to taps. If the water supply is disconnected you will still have a tank full of water.
What is an unvented hot water cylinder?
The unvented hot water cylinder does not require a storage tank and is connected directly to the mains supply. When the water is heated, any excess will be diverted to an expansion tank, which is part of the same system. This type of heating system needs less space and as the cylinder is supplied directly by the mains, it is likely to have stronger water pressure.
